The introduction of “Sinners in the Hands of an angry God” talks about how the sermon affected the people of New England. The way Jonathon Edwards described God and what he did was frightening to people. Jonathon didn’t want people to take him for granted and end up not doing any good for the society and ending up in Hell. Although Jonathon seems like a sinister man, he was described as thoughtful, sensitive, warm, loving father, faithful husband, and a generous friend to the poor and distressed.
Based on the introduction video, there could be a number of things that Jonathon Edwards said that scared the people of New England so much. In my mind, what Jonathon wrote must have been pretty powerful and must have gotten a lot of people thinking. I’m guessing he wrote about God being against some people. Maybe he described God as punishing some people for lack of good deeds or the doing of bad deeds. In these times, that went against almost all of the New England people’s beliefs. Hearing this may have caused them to worry for themselves and close others if they haven’t been doing good things. I can see why this frightened so many people for God was the baseline of many people’s lives back then, and also still today. I can also see why so many people were also angered in a way at Jonathon’s way of looking at God.
