In the movie "The Dead Poets Society" being an individual is unacceptable by the school. Most of the students don't even attempt to use the ideas of transcendentalism due the the harsh consequences that are forced upon the students. However, the movie is about a group of young boys attending the school that make the risky move to be their own person. They do this by re-forming 'The Dead Poets'. It was a group of young men from the same school a generation before them that formed a group to be themselves through poems. The leader of the original Dead Poets was Mr. Keiting. Mr. Keiting was the new English teacher at the boys school and inspired them with the idea of being yourself and making the best of everyday.
The boys at school found out about the Dead Poets Society and were so interested they snuck back to the same cave as Mr. Keiting and starting to repeat the cycle. Sneaking out of their dorms in the first place would bring enough consequences, but what they were doing was against "tradition" and was not accepted by the school or any of the parents. The behavior that they expresses themselves with would eventually lead to expulsion. Another reason for consequences toward the boys was the lies they were telling the school. One boy wanted to be an actor more than anything else, but his father wanted him to be a doctor. This boy, Neil, acted in the school play anyway. Neil's father was aggravated and made it clear to Neil that he would never be able to act again. With that dream blown out of Neil's mind, he ended his life so he didn't have to force himself through his life faking through it, miserable.

Modern day transcendentalist
One modern day transcendentalist is an artist called Skrillex. Skrillex is a master at electronic music and his life revolves around it. For a lot of people, electronic music is not looked at as “real” music and does not get appreciated. These people usually think, as quoted from Skrillex’s song Rock N’ Roll,”Their not artist because no one can play the guitar”. This is stated in his song intended to mock those who think that way towards electronic music. Skrillex, (a.k.a. Sonny Moore), says “Genre has never been important to me, I’ve never thought about music that way”.
That is a very good state of mind in the business he is in considering that his genre of music is usually restricted by preconceived notions and outside expectations. Sonny is obviously different in his own way and has been passionate about it since he was young. Although there are many so called “Haters” towards his music, he says “For me, it’s important to believe in and love the music you’re making. That’s all the inspiration I need to keep making music”. That is a good way to live by for any upcoming new artist.
